5th speed gear ratios

Unread postby dbnorth2000 » Tue Jun 16, 2020 6:53 pm

I am taking apart my 5 spd to replace the primary bearing (25x62x17.5) and have noticed my
slider ring, hub and 5th idler gear are worn. She was having problems getting out of 5th after long hauls for years. My current 5th idler and fixed gears are 37/29 and I was looking at NE 3 gears that are 37/25 and wondering if they could be put in if the opportunity were to come along?\

Hi,

I have no experience with it, but normally the two gears have to add up to the same total number of teeth, 37/29 would be 41/25, assuming the same pitch, otherwise they wont mesh right, so both ratios cant have 37 teeth on the primary. I suppose though if the pitch were different, it could be possible, I wouldn't put it past the French and how they do things.
