Key stuck in ignition

Unread postby manishspatel » Tue Oct 15, 2019 8:58 am

Greetings,

Classic 88 Lesharo has a classic issues... 88 Lesharo with Pont Bonneville 95 conversion including Pontiac steering column and GM ignition key however the key is stuck in ignition and trying to free it from ignition. I am looking for that illusive orange button on steering column but does not look like one there. Any suggestions?

I recollect a couple times with the key stuck issue, only on ours the
key would not turn the engine on. One locksmith was able to get me
out of the fix with simply using more pressure on the key and working
steering wheel back and forth, attempting to dislodge things, however
liberal use of the WD40 turned out the best long term fix. When the
problem occurred I was en route to the east coast and due to stop in
the shop of a Lesharo/Pugeot mechanic. Upon hearing of the problem he
said, "NOOOOOO use the PB Blaster!", which he did.
After that I immediately experienced a nearly fatal relapse of
sticking, which had been improved by the WD40, so I ignored his well
intended advice thereafter. I tried again with WD 40 and that again
did help, and I recollect that it took 3 or more applications over the
course of 3 or more days plus another couple applications over the
next couple weeks before the problem simply went away. I have vague
recollections of taking apart steering column and searching for that
button too... some kind of small thing on the end of the key cylinder
opposite end of the key insertion point, but on mine I was not able to
find that thing... or it had been altered or something... with some
creative workaround that had to do with our conversion.
I know with the key already stuck in there, you don't think wd 40
can be got in there, but if there is any way to get it into the
cylinder with the little straw tip applicator, however messy, I
recommend trying. A couple plastic bags may be of some assistance in
keeping the spray from flying around and dribbling onto the mat.

Any ideas, Larry Schoppe? It's a GM conversion with a GM steering column, it sounds like.

Hi,I think you have to push the key inward - to move the entire lock assembly inward - to release the lock to rotate further for key removal.

To remove the Key Switch assembly.
1 Remove the small screw under the key end of the assembly
2 Down the column, right side or on top--,find the key stitch to wiring harness connector.--- separate
3 .Locate the lock pin extending from the left hand side of the key switch mounting housing..
4. With ignition key in the lock, start at OFF slowly turn the key to the right (clockwise) until a small indicator arrow aligns with the mark on the lock face between off and accessory,
5 In this position, you should be able to depress the lock pin back into the lock mechanism allowing the key to pull out the lock and the complete switch along with the switch wiring harness mechanism..

Yes,you use the whole thing. Use only one donor...that way all parts fit. Present choice is the Olds, Buick and Pontiac 3800 Supercharged engines. Drive beautifully, up and down hills (passing )Basics are these very important steps..... First, select a derivable donor, this way you know how well it drives, performs etc. Any engine or trans work---do it now.
Have a dry, level safe place to work, It is gonna take a while so might ought to have a few creature comforts Jack up the donor. Remove hood, bumper front finders for accessibility. Remove the Cradle, with engine, transmission differential, lower control arms, steering, front disc brakes, drive axles connected. This kind of conversion is basically a GM power train with a handy, comfortable little motor home attached. I could go on all night with this but feeling a little old tonight (87) Get yourself a library of FACTORY manuals, the books they sell at the
